Wendell Bleasdell We all know the national instrument of Trinidad & Tobago is the Steel Pan, but when one encounters a pannist so masterful at his craft, it takes the enjoyment of a sweet ‘Pan Tune’ to another level. Here’s where we highlight one of our own Sons of the Soil who deserves the recognition and accolades bestowed upon him. His name is Wendell Bleasdell also known as “Jumper” in the Pan arena and this is his story. Hailing from San Juan, Wendell Bleasdell is a certified Pannist of T&T and his specialty is the Single Guitar and Single-Second Pan. A career spanning almost two decades he started developing his skills at the ripe age of 16, all the way back in 1990 but his professional performing career actually began two years later in ’92. Wendell comes aptly equipped with an extensive repertoire of musical styles including Calypso, Reggae, Classical, Latin, Jazz, Gospel, R&B and even Soca Music all executed professionally through the sweet sounds of the Steel Pan. As a Pannist, both group and solo, Wendell has a number of academic accomplishments to his name. He has played with many top quality Steel Bands and Orchestras including Phase II Pan Groove, San Juan East Side Symphony and Exodus Steel Orchestra. He has also participated in numerous National Competitions even appearing in the Panorama Finals. Wendell also made it to the finals of the “Pan is Beautiful IX” competition where he placed second and not to mention a semi final appearance in the hugely popular televised “Mastana Bahar” musical contest. Ever the achiever, Wendell Bleasdell has managed to produce a full album in 2007 entitled “Caribbean Funset: A Panman Experience”, his first CD compilation which brilliantly showcases his versatility. Among the countries his talent has afforded him the opportunity to travel and perform, Wendell can boast of shows throughout the Caribbean including Barbados, Jamaica and many other cities in the Caribbean Islands. Fast forward to present day, “Jumper” currently attends both The University of Trinidad and Tobago and The Trinity All Generation Schools of The Arts. He is also pursuing studies in Music Theory and Practical Sight Reading while gaining exposure to other musical instruments and genres. The Steel Pan, however remains his first love and his main focus throughout his blossoming career. Ever the generous soul, Wendell also finds the time to share his knowledge with the younger generation, teaching various Pan techniques while maintaining and promoting a greater love, respect and appreciation for the art form. We humbly thank Mr Bleasdell for sharing his story with us and do hope our readers enjoy his exciting story and continue to follow the career and exploits of the man called “Jumper”.
