Umhambi Wendlela - is a renowned musician, author and performer from Khayelitsha. Umhambi Wendlela's musical essays, hardcore-reality lyrics and cultural anthropology impress by strong contrasting messages - The fascinating artworks are a reflection of his great passion for art. Umhambi Wendlela was born on August 20, 1992 in Site B, Khayelitsha as the first of three children of Lungelwa Dyonasi. After attending secondary school, he started his Hip-Hop career as a lyricist and songwriter, where he was introduced to the pioneers of Spaza music and Umculo-buciko. He then attended the shack theatre programs at Makukhanye Art Room under the care of Mandisi Sindo and practiced performance theatre for several years under the direction of Mfundo Hashe. Several art-tour visits to Hermanus, Tsomo, Lady Frere and Queenstown followed. After taking part in several collective exhibitions, he launched his first musical exhibition in the circle for safety and security in his neighbourhood at the age of 26. He took part in several personal and collective exhibitions at home and abroad and became a member of the 1001 SA Stories. In the year of 2018 he attended the Indigenous Ensemble at Arts Cape under the direction of Dizu Plaatjies, Elvis Sibeko and Nolufefe Mtshabe. This new technique fascinated him so much that he created several contemporary musical experiments with various creatives at home and abroad. His music on the websites of Sound cloud, Audio Mack, Hype Magazine, and SlikourOnLife are certainly among the most valuable. His Mix tape project (Neighbourhood-Watcher) can also be streamed in the above mentioned music sites. In addition to his artistic works as an arts activist, Umhambi Wendlela taught the art of public performances and street art for many years at the Abahambi Art Movement in Cape Town and Overstrand. In addition, he dealt and still deals with the creative arts industry which specifically refers to a range of economic activities which are concerned with the generation or exploitation of knowledge and information.
