Né en 1983 à Bamako, John Kalapo s'inscrit en 2010 au Centre de Formation en Photographie de Bamako. En 2016, il suit une formation en photographie documentaire au Market Photo Workshop à Johannesburg. Il a effectué des reportages photo pour Swiss-contact, One Word, Spana, et participe à des ateliers photos et des expositions collectives au Mali et à l'international. Il s'est distingué en remportant plusieurs prix tels que le Tiermey Foundation Bamako Awards et le prix du concours Wiki Loves Africa. Il collabore également au projet de conservation et numération des Archives de la photographie malienne (Malick Sidibé, Abderrahmane Sakaly, Adama Kouyaté entre autres) et du fonds colonial du cercle de Kita pour la British Library.
