At a very tender age Dr. Kanchan Gaba lost her eye sight. She was just a child in a primary school at that time. However, even at that age she did not give up. Her parents admitted her in Calcutta Blind School from where she completed her schooling with outstanding marks. Through her sheer determination to outperform, she secured the 1st position among the differently enabled in the Board Examination which had fetched her a seat at Lady Brabourne College, one of the most prestigious colleges in Kolkata. During her studies at Lady Brabourne College, she was chosen for the National Scholarship Award. After completion of LLB, LLM in Law , she completed her doctorate (Ph.D) in business law from University of Calcutta with a very relevant subject ‘The World Trade Organization, its Legal and Economic Implication in the Indian perspective 2008. She is very found of extensive travel across the world [link-omitted]g a regular trekker and mountaineer, in India she trekked icy Dzongri, the base to Kanchan Jangha, Ryang, Dudital, Boxar Tiger Reserve, Sandakafu and even Harisson Rock in UK. She took her formal training on trekking from Himalayan Mountaineering Institute; the highest mountaineering institute in India [link-omitted] always holding a very charismatic personality and irrespective of her visual disability her sense of humor, the depth of knowledge in every sphere of life , style and fashion statement made her most versatile youth Icon of India in very tender age . Her educational & Social background , luxury lifestyle always attracting many corporates , business houses, clubs, entertainment industries to work with her in multifaced dimensions. She achieved most prestigious Indian awards as president award twice till now . One was from Dr. Sankar Dayal Sharma, [President Scout] and another from Smt. Prativa Patel [Role Model Award]. Apart from President Awards there are many more in her kitty like Olave award [U.K], Ficci Flo award, “Woman Achiever award”, Bharat Nirman Award, Nilam kanga award, Swarswati Samman from Unilever, “True Legend” award from Telegraph, Saraswati Scholar ship from Fair & Lovely ,Bhagat Puran Singh Manav Sewa Award, Shakti Prerana Award 2018, Shepreneure Award 2017, etc. Many documentaries have been made on her life experiences including one by European Union. She has been covered in the book [Women with Pure Wonder] by Vodafone. Her name was also recorded in LIMCA Book of records in1997. In 2019 & 2021 , Dr. Gaba had been chosen to be the District Icon of Kolkata by Election Commission of India for the Parliamentary General Election 2019 and Legislative assembly general elections 2021 respectively . Her contribution ranges from providing services to the disabled to empowering women from marginalized section by formation of self-help groups. Numerous women have become self-reliant and are sole earning members of their family owing to the endeavor of Dr. Gaba. She is a regular speaker in different seminars and conferences on various topics such as CSR, disability, education, women empowerment, entrepreneurship, morality etc. She is also a motivational speaker. She has written many articles on different subjects such as Entrepreneurship & Swami Vivekananda, CSR approach to disability affairs, community based rehabilitation- problems & perspectives etc. which have been published in various journals published by Jadavpur University, Indira Gandhi National Open University, Loreto College etc. Professionally, she runs her own start-up Oriole Management Pvt. Ltd. as C.E.O & Managing Director. She is also the proprietor of Peregrine Publisher & Distributor apart from her regular legal consultancy and guest lectureship in various Universities such as University of Calcutta, IIM Joka ( India) etc. Apart from her professional life, she also act as the Chief Functionary of Turnstone Global, a leading Social Enterprise (not for Profit organization) , looking after disabled, slum children, women empowerment, providing skill training and taking care of safe drinking water and sanitation for the downtrodden.
