Joachim Kimaryo a.k.a. Master J as he is fondly known in Tanzania’s growing music industry founded MJ Records in 1996 in Dar es Salaam.
With humble beginnings, which can be traced back to a modest 20 foot container in his father’s back yard, MJ Records has over the years moved from strength to strength and is today one of Tanzania’s foremost record label.
Master J is undisputedly one of the pioneers of ‘Bongo Flava,’ a distinctive predominantly hip-hop Tanzanian sound that has taken the country by storm. He has played an integral role in the development of ‘Bongo Flava’ and the growth of the broader music industry in Tanzania.
Master J holds a degree in electronics engineering from City University of London, and has always had a keen interest in music. His late father Sylvan Joachim Kimaryo was himself a musician who owned and managed several prominent local bands. Master J learned how to play the keyboard at an early age, something he still enjoys doing to-date.
