Like many of my peers and colleagues, I’ve been brought up in a challenging and potentially dangerous environment for most of my life. Growing up in such an environment, I felt that certain luxuries were always going to be out of reach for me but I soon learnt that it’s completely untrue and this is why I think I should win.
I learnt to be resilient when all odds were stacked against me. I was born with a naturally weak body so I couldn’t always do what the other kids could do due to falling ill all the time but I didn’t let that stop me. I didn’t want to let anything decide for me how my life is going to be. So I started training capoeira in the communities and together with the teachers I would help uplift the positive energy within communities. We would have lessons, then we would do anti bullying workshops and soup kitchen so the kids would have food for the day and so they can take lunch to school. I believe that growing up with less material things than most people makes you humble and understand the importance of sharing and how giving can affect lives for the better.
I also struggled with school and I was somewhat of a delinquent. I battled with many subjects at school, there were moments where I even felt like quitting and I never thought i’d actually make it to matric, even though I really wanted to. After I had been held back twice, it finally hit me that this is a make or break moment in my life, either I continue being held back or a move forward to achieve my dream. Without the support of my family I wouldn’t be, most importantly, without the will and self belief I wouldn’t have left my environment to do better for myself so I could do the same for my community.
Since the begin of my high school experience till now, I’ve been working with Youth radio foundation and Children’s radio foundation to provide communities with interactive projects and activities such as talent shows, bboy workshops and platforms from which they can show off their talents and artistry. Besides contributing to the community, I’ve also begun to teach myself on how to become an active entrepreneur so that I can take the necessary steps to building my own clothing brand that representes my community and townships and that shows that one can truly achieve anything if they work hard for it. Throughout these experiences I feel that I’ve improved my self confidence, my ability to focus on academics and my compassion for others.
To conclude, I believe I should get opportunity because it would help me set a great example for my community and for the generations to follow.
