About this offer

Belakang Padang is a small island in the Riau Islands archipelago. Locally, the area is known by the poetic nickname "The Island of Longing." This nickname stems from a long-held belief. It's said that anyone who sets foot on Belakang Padang is left with an indescribable longing. Something about the island makes visitors want to return, whether it's the tranquil atmosphere, the friendliness of the locals, or the charm of its unspoiled nature and culture. For this reason, the island is believed to be a cure for homesickness and foster a renewed desire to return.

My name is Syam Irfandi. I am a journalist and media professional who has spent many years working in journalism and witnessing the development of digital media in Riau, Indonesia. My professional journey has taken me from the early days of internet-based journalism to the current era of online media and artificial intelligence. My interest in journalism developed alongside the transformation of the media industry. In 1998, I became involved in the development of [link-omitted], one of the early electronic news portals in Riau. I subsequently served as an editor for the portal. At the time, internet journalism was still a relatively new concept, and its potential to become an important part of the media industry was only beginning to emerge. That experience became an important milestone in my professional journey. I witnessed firsthand how technology transformed the way people accessed information, how newsrooms operated, and how journalists had to adapt to changing technologies and audience behavior. My career later expanded into digital media management. I became involved in developing and managing [link-omitted], operated by PT Riaunews Media Pratama. Within the company and editorial structure, I have served as President Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, as well as Editor-in-Chief and Person in Charge. For me, managing a media organization is not simply about producing news or attracting readers. A media organization has a responsibility to provide accurate, verified, balanced, and meaningful information to the public. This principle has remained an important part of my work as both a journalist and a media professional. I have also been active in professional journalism organizations. I am a member of the Indonesian Journalists Association (Persatuan Wartawan Indonesia, PWI) and hold a certified journalism competency qualification. During the 2023 to 2028 term of the PWI Riau leadership, I was entrusted with responsibilities related to journalist competency and certification. My experience in journalism has also led me to take a growing interest in technological developments affecting the media industry. I regard artificial intelligence as one of the major forces shaping the future of journalism. AI can support journalistic work, but its use still requires human oversight, fact-checking, editorial judgment, ethical considerations, and accountability. In 2026, I participated as a speaker in an Artificial Intelligence Focus Group Discussion and Workshop organized by the Indonesian Cyber Media Association (SMSI) Riau in Batam. In the forum, I shared perspectives on the use of AI in journalism, including how technology can serve as a supporting tool while preserving the fundamental principles of journalism. Alongside my responsibilities in media management, I continue to work in journalism across a range of subjects, including government, law, social affairs, the environment, maritime affairs, culture, and technological development. I have also served as Editor-in-Chief and Person in Charge of Indo Maritim, as well as its Pekanbaru Bureau Chief. More than two decades in journalism have taught me that technology will continue to change, while the public's need for reliable information will remain constant. For that reason, I believe the challenge for journalists is not simply to keep pace with technological change, but to ensure that technology is used to strengthen the quality of information while preserving public trust. My journey in journalism continues. From the early generation of internet news portals and the growth of digital media to the emergence of artificial intelligence, I have chosen to keep learning, adapting, and contributing to the development of a media ecosystem capable of responding to change without abandoning the fundamental principles of journalism.
